陈德福会长致朋友的信 (3/16/2011)

Have been busy working on the finalization of our documentary (Chinese and English) but still need to find time to write this letter to you informing on the progress, status and plan of this project so far.

Here are some more information:

(1) Progress

1. Last year: the Chinese and English version completed and won the 2nd prize award at the 2010 China Xian Folk Image Film Festival. It consist of 3 parts (30 minutes each): 1/ Friendship Born in War; 2/ Long Awaited Reunion; 3/ Forever and Ever.

Please visit our website: www.uschinavision.com for more details about the documentary for which this website was setup. One of the contents is about the support and help for our making this documentary we have been getting from many in China and the US. For which please click this link: http://www.uschinavision.com/Read.Asp?PPNewsID=83 Still in Chinese it will soon has its English version. Jasmie Zheng (Zheng Xiangjun), post-graduate student at the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), has been helping us in doing the translation and the editing of this website.

2. Recent preview showings in Beijing include those for students of BFSU and China Foreign Affarirs University. Please see parts of the viewer's comments (attachment 2).

3. Lately I have been working with some related professionels in Beijing to do the final improvement of this documentary which include adding one more part. This will make the documentary to have 4 parts (still 30 or more minutes each):

Part 1. Friendship Born in War;
Part 2. Long Awaited Reunion;
Part 3. Brotherhood Beyond Borders;
Part 4. From Genaration to Generation. .

(2) Status:

Chinese version: Visual parts completed, Will see the insertion of the added commentary, then the music, to use music specially composed for this documentary. All have to be completed before the end of this month.

English version: Improvement to be made as soon as the Chiense version is completed, including adding the new parts, improving and editing the English translation. Alex Miskov will redo the English narration. The English version, coming from the Chinese version. need to be improved to such an extent that it is American viewers oriented. To be completed by mid April, 2011.

(3) Plan

1. The above Chinese and the English version completed, we will have a premier showing in Beijing (hope to work it out together with the American Embassy here. On the 23rd of last month I met Dale G. Kreisher, Cultural Affairs Officer, Public Affairs Section, American Embassy in Beijing, Gave him the English version of this documentary (the one winning the award of last year film festival mentioned above) for feedback and info.

2. Arrangement being made for the showing of this documentary nationwide before my departure from Beijing back to New York next month. Though the documentary (the 3 parts mentioned above) was actually already completed, we were recently requested by those who wanted to show this documentary in China (200 local TV stations all over the country will be among the first to air it) to include more stories in the documentary and therefore the length of which be extended. Hence the added Part 4 and more content included.

3. Will first show the English version to you all as soon as I am back in NY.

4. Contact and discuss with Documentary Channel, History Channel and PBS for the nationwide showing of this documentary in the US.

5. To make the documentary more American viewers oriented necessary editing and improvement is needed. This will include such aspect as the content and English translation and the way of presentation of this documentary. Glenn Shive, Charles Nolly and Alex Miskov and others will join us in doing this.
.
6. As for the sequel of this documentary, shooting and production will be done only after the funding is acquired.

(4) Help still needed (especially from Mike Pastor):.

1. Photos on Dick before he went to China in 1944 and after he returned home in 1945. Also, photos on Dick and Naomi before their 1972 China's visit and after they return from China (if available, expect to be provided by Naomi or Mike or others).

Also those on Hyman and Ed Bell and Morris Wald (if available, expect to be provided by David Feldman, Lynn Bell and Benji Wald and others). Hopefully Ira and Gene Perelson could also help providing some photos needed by this documentary.

These photos are needed as more stories on those mentioned above will be included in the final version of this documentary.

Any other photos you all think need to be added. If available please e-mail them as soon as possible to me at this e-mail address and uschinafriend@gmail.com

2. Regarding voice-over, those done by Mike and Ella and the one done by Naomi ealier were used and included in the new version of this documentary. More may be needed as we start with the finalization of the English version. Will contact you when there is such a need.

3. My partners and I would like to translate David Feldman's book "Born in War" and suggest to have it published in China. Will discuss this with David, including matters such as copy right and others.

4. Any thing else you would like to suggest.

Thank you for spending your valuable time to read this letter. Your comment, opinion and/or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Also to all others whose names and e-mail addresses are listed here. Thanks for your support. Will keep you intouch and informed especially when this documentary is fully finalized and aired all over China and the US.

Warm Regards and Best Wishes.
