Lines Composed in Winter Night
- A snowy night, 1960
Heavy snow weighs on the pine,
The pine stand straight and firm.
To know its noble and unshakable nature,
Come to see it when the snow melts down.
When cold midwinter comes
Hundreds of flowers disappear.
But the unyielding red plums all
Stand valiantly to the wind and snow.
Orchids grow in valleys deep and serene ,
Hardly known to anybody.
Their enchanting fragrance, however,
Attracts seekers all over mountains.
The Chrysanthemum blooms in spite of frost,
The vicious frost and wicked wind.
Since she by nature can withstand icy weather
What harm could the frost do to her?
Majestic of all heroes ancient and modern,
He swam across the Yangtze river,
Saying "at ease" on that day.
Alas, the universe is vast and fathomless.
